The Great Midwest Train Show 2011

Today, we went to visit The Great Midwest Train Show, at the Dupage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton Illinois. We had the grandest of times here at the Train Show; we saw trains from yore, and trains of now. This Train show is mostly for those who are interested in miniature train models; there is everything to train vendors, train demonstrators, and special services. When I said you have to be “interested” what I meant by that, is willing to invest a lot of time and money to make your own miniature model train set. There were not that many Lego Train model Exhibits, but the ones that were here, are only in Exhibit 1. The other Exhibits are mostly Lionel, or MARX train exhibits and vendors.

Exhibit 1 – The Great Midwest Train Show 2011

Exhibit 1 is the first. And only exhibit to have a Lego Train Model, but fortunately it is the very first thing you see walking Into the Dupage County Fairgrounds. When we got to the train show, almost all the parking spaces were taken, so many in fact they had to let People Park on the grass, away from the filled up parking lot; but good thing there is free parking. Now this ain’t no Cantigny Train Show, but surprisingly it is just as enjoyable, even though there aren’t that many Lego exhibits. In this exhibit, there is a lot of Lionel, and MARX train vendors, but none of them were worth the price, or worth the quality. I think most of the trains selling at this convention are older than I am! Besides the train vendors, there are also a couple of Lego vendors as well, but it is located around the proximity of the Lego Exhibit, but it wasn’t anything special. All they sold there are Lego sets they are selling now, nothing from the 90’s, or the 80’s which disappointed me in some ways. The Prices of the Lego’s were actually rather cheap, the cheapest thing there is a medium sized Kingdom set sold for about $5.00 but in retail it would be $20.00, I was expecting a bit more variety but what I saw was not much. The main Attraction, the Lego Train Exhibit, was located on a stage near the entrance of the Dupage County Fairgrounds, in plain sight but not many people were over there. The Exhibit, in my opinion was mediocre at best, but that doesn’t mean it is a bad exhibit. It includes a lot of Lego sets, everything from Harry Potter to SpongeBob. If you read my other Blog posts, my favorite type of humor, is random humor, I don’t really like pop-culture-y references, so this was refreshing. An example of this, is in a traffic jam, there is a Star Wars walker in the road, try to find them all! I have enjoyed this exhibit, but I didn’t goof around much, straight to business, after all I had 4 more exhibits to go to!

What is Lego planning for this up-coming Holiday Season?

The Holidays are just around the corner, and so far in the year 2011, Lego has released two Train Sets, the Lego 10219 Maresk Train set, and the most recent, the Lego 3677 Red Cargo Train. Is there going to be a new structural installment? Such as buildings, shops, stations and so on. My prediction is that Lego is going to hatch something very special this holiday season. Last year, Lego Released a Star Wars themed Christmas calendar, and the year before that was Kingdom themed, and the year before that was pirate themed. Looks like Lego is going to the list of themes, and the trains did not have their turn yet, so we can hope that this will be the year they release the Train themed Calendar.

Lego 3677 Red Cargo Train Update:

The Lego 3677 Red Cargo Train released information on the details of this up-coming Cargo Train for fall of 2011. There are a total of 831 pieces, and some of the most desired pieces are going to be included within this set, the Power Functions pieces. Unlike the 10219 Maersk train that didn’t include any Power Functions pieces, it resulted that the 10219 Maersk train will not be able to run. To make it run, you would have to buy them separately, and they don’t come without a pretty penny. The Lego 3677 Red Cargo Train however, comes with all the essential Power Functions part to have it motorized. A motor is a motor, but what is it going to run on? This set includes 40 pieces of track, 16 Flexible, which you might recognize to be the 8867 Flexible Track, 16 curved tracks, and 8 straight rails. With a track that long, there must be something to do, and somewhere to go, with this you load up the train with precious cargo, and to remove rubble from the conveyer belt. The train includes three different train wagons; not including the main the main train engine, there is the brown tipper wagon, cargo wagon, and vehicle container. With the tipper wagon, you can dump the store rubble in it from the conveyer belt, and with the cargo wagon, you can place oil drums, and crates for a safe journey across the track. The vehicle container wagon has a slot where you would put the truck, and a mini crane to load the truck with crates and oil drums. With all those functions from the train, crane, truck and conveyer belt, there must be a way to control them all right? There included four minifigures to handle all these tools to your needs. This set is due to release this fall, so keep an eye on your local toy store, but if it is a Lego only exclusive, check the Lego shop at home page.

New 2011 Cargo Train announced!

The Lego 3677 Red Cargo train is going to be a brand new Lego train set was announced in the Lego product catalogue for 2011. This appears to be a Cargo Train themed set, I was a little bit let down, seeing how the Maersk was a Cargo train, but none the less I am excited for the release of this set. This set was even announced even the Lego Catalogue! Well, sort of. The Lego 3677 Red Cargo train was first spotted at Lego World 2011 in Copenhagen, Denmark, then in the catalogues. Either saw it first in the catalogue, or at the convention, this set is going to be released in the month of August. No information on how many pieces come with this set, or how much it will cost, but from the pictures I have examined, it appears that there will be four train wagons, three minifigures, and a lot of accessories. Of the four main train engines, there appears to be the red main train engine, a brown tipper wagon, crane wagon and Cargo wagon. Of the accessories, there appears to be a truck, a coal distributer, and a brand new mini-train car that I haven’t seen before. Unlike the Maersk train, which it had a matching color scheme, where everything was all Maersk, but with this one, is more realistic. In real train yards, most of the wagons there are mingled mashed, and jumbled about, which means no wagon looks the same, it is both realistic-ish and fresh idea. I loved the old Cargo train I’ve reviewed some time ago, and this one is like its new little brother, a fine addition to the family! The only thing I don’t like about this set that it appears to contain both flexible tracks, and curved track! I prefer the curved tracks over the flexible tracks, because the flexible tracks are kind of clunky to use, and I feel like it will fall apart when that train makes it’s turn. I think, either have one or the other. This will be a collector’s item one day, so grab them when you can!

Brickworld – River Ballroom Exhibit

The River Ballroom Exhibit was the last stop at Brickworld, and it was a great way to end it too! There were very few displays, not as impressive then the ones in the Ravinia ballroom exhibit, but even more so then the Botanic garden exhibit. The exhibits are carefully planned out, and well executed; but the only problem with them is that there were not too many of them. Unlike the Botanic Garden, it was not equal is vendors, and exhibits, now here the percentage of vendors to exhibits would be 75% to 25%. All four corners of this room are full of vendors, selling everything from Lego sets, to stop-motion DVDs. The most noticeable booth of all of Brickworld must be the Brickarms, and Brickforge vendors. How could you not notice it, because there are posters and signs all of the hallways when you enter, advertising them. Besides the trains, being my first priority, I thought it would be a nice treat to get some accessories from some of the vendors, but to my disappointment, they’re all sold in packs, not individual. Last year they used to sell them separately, but this year they sell them in little packages that go for five, to eight dollars a pack. The lines are also the worst; I stood in line for a half hour to pick out something I wanted. Overall, minus all the waiting, and standing Brickworld was the best convention I have been to since the Cantigny Train show. I will be looking forward to next year to go again.

Brickworld – Botanic Garden Ballroom Exhibit

An arm and a leg? Oh boy! what a deal!

The Botanic Garden was a mix between the Michigan ballroom exhibit, and the River ballroom exhibit, because it had a mix of mature, and well made Lego displays, as well as something to buy. Unlike the River room which sells Custom Lego minifigures, and Lego parts, the Botanic Garden sells old and new Lego sets, and they don’t come cheap either. The price for a modern set we have today, such as Alien Conquest, would be double or triple the retail price! I understand that the older sets from the 80-90’s would cost double or triple from the original retail price, but why new set? Right next to the sale of expensive lego sets, there was a build your own minifigure booth! It was very different from the Lego store minifigure builder, because there are more parts, and accessories to experiment to create your own minifigure. In the Lego store, you have to make three minifigures that contain, head, torso, leg, hat, and accessory, and they sell for $9.99. The booth at Brickworld however, charges one minifigure with head, torso, leg, hat, and accessory for $5.00, or three for $11.99. This might seem like a rip off, seeing how you pay two dollars more for minifigures you can get cheaper at the Lego store, but these minifigures have more variety of what kind of head, torso, leg, hat, and accessory that can be chosen. The parts I assume, come from new and old Lego sets that were dissected because of that exact reason. I didn’t buy either Lego store minifigure, or the minifigures from Brickworld, yes I do find that Brickworld has more variety, but both are a bit pricy for a minifigure. Besides all that, the displays there where big, creative, and had a lot of things going on. You can see many conflicts within the display itself, such as a normal gas station, people filling up their car, truck, tie fighter… Wait what?  Well at least the prices on the display are better than last year… The trains are not as impressive, a few caught my eye as being unique, and or something I saw already, or just a set slapped on the track. Overshadowed by its older brother, the River exhibit, it has better trains, and better things products to buy.
