The act of giving doesn’t always have to be during Christmas!

When a young boy named James Groccia wanted the Lego 10194 Emerald Night train 2 years ago, his parents told him to save up the money to buy it himself. By the time he had saved $100 for the train, it was discontinued by Lego. He still wanted the train, but he could not find it in the Lego store or Lego Shop at Home. On Amazon and eBay they were being sold as collectibles for $250. He did not want to save for another several years to buy it, so on September 1st, 2012, he decided to write Lego to see if they had any spares he could purchase from them. Lego initially wrote back to James saying they could not do anything for him. But Lego was impressed that James had spent two years to save up money for the train set, and did not want to let him down. Much to his surprise, a package was sent to him on October 17th. The family made a video of his reaction. It warmed my heart to see the young boy have his dream fulfilled. The gift of giving is no longer for December alone. Go see the video for yourself:

Pre-Black Friday Prediction

Black Friday is just around the corner, and like all businesses, there will be great pre-holiday sales after thanksgiving! The hassle of waking up 4:00 in the morning does not sound too appealing to us earth dwelling citizens, so like last year there will be a black Friday shop-at-home deals, and you may be able to get free shipping with your order! If you are those people to snag those gifts before people even wake up, many stores like Toys’r’us, Target, or Wal-mart will have in-store deals as well. Hope you won’t eat too much for Thanksgiving, as you will be doing a lot of cardio!

Double VIP Points this Halloween season!

October, what is it known for? leaves falling, seasons changing, and of course, candy! But what is it also known for that we take for granted? I’ll give you a hint, it was a discovery that would change the course of history forever… For those of you who still don’t know, it’s Columbus day! He had come here to America for the quest of Gold, but none was found here. lucky for us a type of gold that seems to be given away at any opportune time, the fabled “Double VIP points” has come back for this month. Usually the number of VIP points you get is the same amount of money you spend at a Lego store, such as 20.00 for a set would get you 20 points, but in this case with the double VIP points, it is now a whooping 40 points! Now you get the value of two, for one. Lego once again made hard times, more manageable; and with all those extra VIP points, you guys can start scratching up some for the new bullet train, said to be released sometime soon…

Train themed event calendar?

A bit too early to be talking about christmas? nonsense! Christmas time is my favorite time of the year, and what is better then a new advent calendar? we had the city themed calendar for a few years, we even had a star wars themed one, but wheres the love for the train theme? it would run so well with the upcoming train sets Lego has planned, so it’s a great idea in practice and in reality! they can have everyday add something to the train track under the Christmas tree… while you’re opening those presents! I don’t know, it would be awesome if they did that, but if you can have a star wars one, why not Trains?

Lego 80th Anniversary!

On August 10, 2012 Lego has become 80 years old! To celebrate that achievement, Lego has released a video on their channel, about the humble beginnings of the company. It is a seventeen minute video, and as insane as it might sound, the video goes by really fast! the image on this post is a screenshot from the video, and as you can see it is completely CG. Half the time i was watching it, i thought of Pixar, of how fluid the animations were, and how nicely the story transitioned itself. I am an enthused Lego fanatic, and i didn’t know that Lego started off making totally different things they did today! the evolution of the Lego brick was the most fascinating, i won’t give anything away, but it was an ingenious how such a small change can make a big difference. The part that stuck out to me the most, was how Lego train played a bigger role in the development, and the growth of the company back then, i won’t say what, but watch the video to find out!

Metra Safety Contest 2011-2012 **Update**

Attention native Illinois residents, Submissions for the Metra’s “Sixth Annual Safety Contest”  ended March 15, 2012. Hmm? What is the Metra Safety contest you ask, and what is Metra? Well to answer both questions, Metra is a native Illinois train transportation company, and this “Safety Contest” is to educate and promote railroad safety awareness to make school children safer around trains. Metra has had this annual contest since 2006, which is held throughout six Illinois counties: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will. Each year they have a different theme for their posters, this year’s theme was “Lead the Way.” They encourage students K-12 to express creativity through a safety poster. If you are not an artist, then you can write an essay about the importance of railroad safety.  One winner from each grade group for the essay will be awarded an ipad: (grades K-4),  (grades 5-8) and  (grades 9-12). There will be a first, second, and third place winner K-12 students for the Safety Poster Contest, so everyone has a chance to win! The prizes are worth it, first prize this year was an Apple Ipad, and the year before was a laptop. but what remains the same is the second place prize of $250, and third place prize of $100 gift card. What a great deal! People with great artistic talent will have no problem winning this contest! The posters, or essays have to conform with the rules on the website: http://www.metracontest.com/ Unfortunately, the contest does not start till next fall. There is also a “People’s Choice Award” for the first Place Poster Winners K-12 where the public can vote for their favorite poster. The winner of the “People’s Choice Award” will receive an additional $250 for their efforts. This year Metra decided to open up online voting to enable more people to participate. Rather than in the past displaying posters each day for a week at a different location at their five most frequented downtown train stations limited the number of commuters able to cast their votes. The online voting for the “People’s Choice Award” ended July 13, 2012. The winners of the 2011-2012 Metra Safety Poster Contest and the “People’s Choice Award” are to be announced in the fall. I hope to see at least one Lego themed Metra poster…

**The deadline for the People’s Choice Award has been extended to August 13th 2012, here is another chance to vote for your favorite poster!**

Motorized Lego ghost train?!

How could i almost forget about this little beauty at the Brickworld convention? I suppose it was the asstonding amount of displays, and activities, it slipped my mind. This, was one of the coolest builds i think, because it takes the new “9467 Lego Ghost Train” and places a motor in it. At first, you are like, “what’s so hard about doing that? Well, my dear viewer, the Lego Monster Train does not use the traditional Lego Train wheels, instead they use a technic wheel. They chose to do this so when the train moves, it can move the winds up and down, and appear to be “floating” So that all had to be changed so it can actually run on tracks. The lady of whom i was talking too, agrees that train sets need to be motorized to give the full effect of play. It is a work in progress, but from what i can see, it will be something that will be the new big thing!

Brickworld Overview

Brickworld 2012 has finially met it’s end, and quite frankly, it seemed like it ended the second it started. amazing how quickly the years go by for the next annual Brickworld. Even with the small disappointments, such as bad MOC’s, lack of vendors, and lack of variety, it is safe to assume it was way better then last year. Ravinia was the shining point because it was bigger then last year! More people came together, and truly made an amazing experience at Brickworld. Just like fine wine, it gets better with age, and i will be craving for more next year.

The River Exhibit

This year, the River exhibit did not contain any MOC of anykind… sort of. In this exhibit there isn’t a huge display of a train, or a monolith of a building, but instead, it is a big game room. In this game room, kids bring their legoes they bought, or the ones they brought with them, and trade among their friends. Right in the middle of this tiny room, are these tiles that serve as game tiles where custom made Lego <indstorm robots go head to head, and battle for your entertainment. It is pretty impressive to see these different robots fight each other, because sometimes when a robot is going to attack, it moves it’s arms and attempts to knock down the robot, and the other shoots foam darts at them. It was more of a technological feat then anything else. Besides the robot fight, there is a fully working “Lego” tractor engine, in the room. the pistons move back and forth, and the fan in the front rotates. In this room, it is more about what is on the inside, then on the outside.

The Botanic Garden Exhibit

There was not all that much to see in the Botanic Garden exhibit, the creations in here are not as impressive as the ones from Michigan, or from Ravinia. My guess is that this is a beginners room, small limited space, with cheap prices; which i could understand. No trains, or train related Lego MOC’s in here, just some cityscape, and some custom vehicles here and there. The room is atleast 1/10 of the Ravinia ballroom, and half the size of the Michigan ballroom. Then there were a few wild vendors selling custom printed Lego bricks for a huge price mark up. Then there are the used bricks vendors who more or less have the same stuff in the Ravinia room.
